The Albert and Alba Cuenca Research Institute for Treatment Approaches to Age Related Diseases
The Cuenca Research Institute for Treatment Approaches to Age-Related Diseases was established from a broad and innovative perspective on the field of gerontology. One that views aging as a complex, multidimensional, and inspiring process influenced by a whole network of factors: physical, psychological, social, familial, and economic.
Gerontology focuses on the study of the social, cultural, psychological, cognitive, and biological aspects of aging. It emphasizes the functional, social, and emotional condition of the elderly person, components that influence one another and together shape health and quality of life throughout the aging process. The Institute explores the broader contexts within which diseases appear and influence each other. We strive to promote optimal aging, ensuring that old age itself can be a healthy, active, and meaningful period of life.
Promoting healthy aging requires acknowledging factors that are difficult to measure, such as feelings of loneliness, functional or financial decline or emotional hardship. Addressing these factors is seen as a central mission, both at the research level and in practice.
The Institute aims to serve as a coordinating body for activities related to aging across Tel-Aviv University, consolidating knowledge, centralizing initiatives, and fostering dialogue between interdisciplinary fields, ranging from medicine and health sciences to social sciences and social work. These connections enable a deeper understanding of the aging process and open the door to joint thinking and the development of necessary therapeutic solutions.
To bridge the existing gap between emerging research and its practical application, the Institute seeks to initiate processes that strengthen both research and practical excellence in gerontology and geriatrics, using appropriate methodological tools. The Institute places great importance on encouraging the next generation of professionals to choose and commit to this vital field, recognizing its broad impact on society.
The Institute operates in three main arenas:
- Education - Developing and teaching courses and lectures for graduate students, based on a multidisciplinary therapeutic approach.
- Research - Providing scholarships and research grants to students and researchers working on topics related to the Institute’s areas of activity, as well as defining, developing, and implementing advanced and relevant research methodologies in the field of gerontology.
- Discourse and Policy Promotion - Organizing seminars and joint thinking events to discuss core aging issues and provide a platform for innovative research supported by the Institute. Furthermore, the Institute works to foster a supportive network for caregivers, as part of strengthening the essential multidisciplinary approach to care for older adults.
